I KNOW IT'S NOT SO

About Patricia Evans' poetry

"Although I have spent time with Patrícia Evans on three separate occasions, I feel I know Patrícia Evans only through her poetry. She hides nothing, she surrenders everything. It is some of the most powerful poetry I have ever read. And I have read only English translations of her poems, so those who read her in her native Portuguese will experience her even more intimately. They should prepare themselves for imagery, anger, compassion, despair, humor, insight, knowledge of her self and the deepest love for those she loves, especially dad."

You!

Love without limit

whoever will come to stay at your side,

so when you feel your soul appart

you may be sure you are not alone

- even if loneliness is a ghost

inside your haunted heart

Love without fear

whoever will come to give his hand when you stumble,

whoever will hold you and keep you standing

when your steps waver

Love without doubt

whoever will dry your wet aged face

whoever will ease your burden and lessen its weight

when the pain hurts too much

And love! you must desperately love

whoever will put the stone in your way,

whoever will wind the anchor about your neck

and leave your wounds open to the worms

And whoever will

step on your fallen tears,

spit on you when you bleed,

you shall love urgently,

that you might be deeply hurt,

might cry and endless river,

so might have the chance to comfort you in his arms

he, who will defeat

the ghost haunting your heart

You! Love with deepest thanks,

love as your own soul

whoever will have fed your loneliness!
