I KNOW IT'S NOT SO

About Patricia Evans' poetry

"Although I have spent time with Patrícia Evans on three separate occasions, I feel I know Patrícia Evans only through her poetry. She hides nothing, she surrenders everything. It is some of the most powerful poetry I have ever read. And I have read only English translations of her poems, so those who read her in her native Portuguese will experience her even more intimately. They should prepare themselves for imagery, anger, compassion, despair, humor, insight, knowledge of her self and the deepest love for those she loves, especially dad."

MEDO / FEAR

MEDO
( © Patrícia Evans)

Senhor,
não tenho muita certeza
sobre as coisas e vontades divinas
e nem mesmo sobre as minhas
e daí tenho pouco a pedir
sobre o céu, sobre a terra
ou sobre o que vai no peito.
Dê-me o que me é de direito,
o meu todo merecimento;
glória, amores, fortuna
ou quedar só, no esquecimento,
mas Senhor,
seja qual o destino guardado,
se ter alma santa
ou o corpo apedrejado,
imploro que eu tenha coragem
e força nas minhas pernas
para ir sempre adiante
tendo o caminho de casa
ou as terras de um errante,
pra que eu não pule uma parte,
nunca caia cansada,
nem cumpra a vontade sagrada
assim meio nas coxas
ou pior, pela metade.

FEAR

Lord,
I'm not very sure about Divine things or Your will,
or even about my own,
so, I have few things to ask for
when it's about heaven and earth
or what goes on inside the chest.
Give me what is supposed to be my right,
what I have earned:
Glory, love, fortune,
staying lonely, fading away, being forgotten..
But, Lord,
whatever my fate is --
if it is having a holy soul
or a sinner's stoned body --
I beg of you to make me brave
and make my legs strong
to keep me walking forward,
leading me home,
or to the land of vagabonds,
so I won't skip a single step,
won't become sick,
won't miss a thing,
nor risk not fully
accomplishing Your Holy Will
by giving less than my best,
or worse, to just slap things together.
