I KNOW IT'S NOT SO

About Patricia Evans' poetry

"Although I have spent time with Patrícia Evans on three separate occasions, I feel I know Patrícia Evans only through her poetry. She hides nothing, she surrenders everything. It is some of the most powerful poetry I have ever read. And I have read only English translations of her poems, so those who read her in her native Portuguese will experience her even more intimately. They should prepare themselves for imagery, anger, compassion, despair, humor, insight, knowledge of her self and the deepest love for those she loves, especially dad."

TENTA ME AMAR, NÃO! / DO NOT RISK LOVING ME!

TENTA ME AMAR, NÃO!
(© Patrícia Evans)
.
Tenta me amar, não, oh! poeta,
que tuas mãos são pincéis
e embora me veja papéis,
do revés sou eu assecla.
Tuas mãos, tu as teria amputadas
onde jaz devidamente enterrada.

DO NOT RISK LOVING ME
(© Patricia Evans)

Do not risk loving me, oh, poet!
That your hands are brushes, I know,
but if I am the blank screen you see...
it is because Solitude is now my Owner.
Your hands, you'd have them amputated,
and Love you would not have at your feet.
Try to have me not written, then,
in your so ill-fated verse.
No, oh poet! It's not worth the misery
of having the mind needlessly tortured!

My soul holds no mystery, poet,
but it may take you to the thousands of cemeteries
where its pieces lie properly buried.
