I KNOW IT'S NOT SO

About Patricia Evans' poetry

"Although I have spent time with Patrícia Evans on three separate occasions, I feel I know Patrícia Evans only through her poetry. She hides nothing, she surrenders everything. It is some of the most powerful poetry I have ever read. And I have read only English translations of her poems, so those who read her in her native Portuguese will experience her even more intimately. They should prepare themselves for imagery, anger, compassion, despair, humor, insight, knowledge of her self and the deepest love for those she loves, especially dad."

BECAUSE I GROW OLD

BECAUSE I GROW OLD
(© Patrícia Evans)

I have to start a diet,
swim, exercise,
start walking, stay out of the sun.
take care of my mind
my eyes, my smile.
I need to change,
to stop being crazy,
to like money a little more,
to enjoy Rio de Janeiro,
to accept a good husband,
a nine to five job.
To charge for my art,
do less charity,
fuck like they fuck,
I can like they can.
I have to close my eyes,
stop wanting differently,
go on, always move ahead,
never leave the road,
never see the other side of the walls
and never want to go beyond them.
I have to forget I loved.
I have to say amen.
