I KNOW IT'S NOT SO

About Patricia Evans' poetry

"Although I have spent time with Patrícia Evans on three separate occasions, I feel I know Patrícia Evans only through her poetry. She hides nothing, she surrenders everything. It is some of the most powerful poetry I have ever read. And I have read only English translations of her poems, so those who read her in her native Portuguese will experience her even more intimately. They should prepare themselves for imagery, anger, compassion, despair, humor, insight, knowledge of her self and the deepest love for those she loves, especially dad."

VOLTA / COME BACK

VOLTA
( © Patrícia Evans)
,
Volto meus olhos para o abismo.
Torço as mãos com nervoso.
Não amo mais, eu cismo.
Obsessivo esse mar em mim revolto,
que só se acalma quando tu mergulhas
e dái quando o fazias, lembro,
iam-se todas as amarguras
em marolas desalinhadas.
A tua fisionomia agora amarelada
quero sentir mas pela foto não posso.
Ah! esse abismo...
quando meus olhos para ele volto
ele me olha de volta.

COME BACK
( © Patrícia Evans)
I turn my eyes to the abyss,
twisting my hands nervously.
I don' t love anymore, I brood.
This stormy sea in me - it's an obsession
that calms down only when you come in;
and then, when you did, I remember,
all the sorrows were gone.
with the misaligned waves.
Your faded face --
I wish I could feel it through the picture, but I can't.
Oh, this abyss...
When I turn my eyes to it,
it looks back at me.
